Refugee Education
The Schoolbox Project
Providing mobile, trauma-informed education and support to children and families in refugee camps
The Solution
The Schoolbox Project provides mobile, trauma-informed education and support to children and families in refugee camps. At the project’s core are “Schoolboxes,” solar-powered and child-friendly spaces that are converted from shipping containers, school buses, abandoned buildings, tents, bamboo structures, or even sidewalks. All services are delivered through a lens of trauma-informed care where children are given opportunities for creativity and emotional expression within an environment that assures rhythm and routine. Each schoolbox is staffed with a Director and Assistant Director, in addition to a rotation of teachers and volunteers who are trained to work with traumatized children. Students are not penalized for challenging behavior; rather, the designated “One-to-One of the Day” volunteer responds to the child’s needs.
